2017 Finished Quilts - Civil War Scrappy Nine Patch - #27

Again, I am skipping around, I am all done posting the 2016 finishes, and I am onto 2017 finishes.  I am keeping the number system, so I can keep track of the number of quilts I have done.  I have done more than this(just a few is all), but I have just begun recording them beginning with my 2016 New Year's resolution.

I got back four quilts from my long arm quilter the beginning of May of this year.  I have already posted about one of them, as it was a gift that needed to be mailed right away.

This quilt was also a BOM, but this one from Homestead Hearth. The pattern is from the book, Primitive Gatherings, by That Patchwork Place (which had to be bought to do the quilt), and simply called "From the Nineteenth Century Quilt".  Basically it is just a scrappy nine patch.  I posted about finishing the top here.   I organized the blocks so it would be longer and less wider.  I was going to try to make it bigger, but I waited too long to finish this quilt, and I couldn't locate more of the background fabric.  It is a tea stained and spotted muslin by Windham Fabrics.  Instead of taking it apart to make it the correct size, I left it alone and it turned out fine.

When I posted the last 10 quilts on my FB feed, this quilt was most favorite quilt from my friends.  I think people relate more to classic quilts, or old fashioned quilts, rather than the new designs.  I know that I like them the best.

Close up of the scrappy civil war reproductions used in this quilt.

It has a plain white muslin backing and a tan binding.  I am hoping to tea dye the backing, so it will match the front better.

2016 Finished Quilts - Crossroads - #25

Warning, lots of pictures.  This quilt is one quilt that I started in 2016, and finished in 2016.  Actually, it is a BOM from Fat Quarter Shop, and it was a Mystery BOM quilt.  I did lots of many posts about the process of making these blocks.  You can read it all about it here. This link will show you all the blocks up close and the process of completing the quilt top.

Here is the front of the block all done and in it glory.  It is done in a fabric line from one of my favorite Mode designers, Joanna Figureoa who does Fig Tree fabric lines.  This line is called Strawberry Hills Revisited.  The colors are cool and yummy.

This is the different way of doing a backing.  The last instruction was the big block star surrounded by the backing fabric.  Really like this backing for this quilt, would probably do it again, if I am short on backing fabric.  Usually I have fabric left over from these BOM's and could do a big block to make the backing stretch.

Picture of the quilt all laid out, you can see the red Irish chain bringing all the blocks together.

Here are close ups of the different blocks throughout the quilt.  The constant block is the red Irish Chain.

This quilt had five borders, all the same size, just in different colors.  The one sawtooth border is scrappy reds.  This took a long time to sew and get put together, but I really like the end result.

The backing is a favorite of mine, being white with pink/red roses all about and the polka-a-dot binding is just perfect.

A better view of the back, you can see the big block better.

It's been folded for awhile, with other quilts on top of it, so when I pick it up after photographing it, I folded it different so that the fold lines don't get engrained in the quilt.  I read somewhere that to keep the permanent creases from forming, to take them out and refold them a different way.

2016 Finishes - Thimbleberries Poinsettia - #22

This is a square quilt from the Thimbleberries Room by Room, for the month of April, 2008.  It came early in the program, so one could get it done for Christmas, as this is called Poinsettia.  It has four poinsettia blocks in this quilt.

It looks smaller than it really is, as it is 50" by 50".  I thought about cutting a slit in-between two of the blocks, and binding it with some of the left over binding fabric.  This way it could be used for a tree skirt around the Christmas tree.  We'll see. Maybe. Not sure.

Up close view of the poinsettia blocks, all made with half square triangles.  Super easy to make.

Up close of the simple borders and binding.

Once again, the backing is done with a tone on tone beige.

2016 Finished Quilts - Thimbleberries Garden Glory - #21

I am kinda all over the place with the multiple programs I participated in over the years.  There are a total of 102, plus or minus, projects to work on at any given time.  So, I have been skipping around choosing the projects I want to work on, moree based on what is my favorites.

This quilt comes from the program called Room by Room, during the year of 2008.   More Specific this was a kit for the month of May.  The name of the quilt is called Garden Glory.

I made this quilt right after I was laid off from my job of 7 years, during the downturn of the economy.  It was one of the first projects I worked on during this dark time of my life.  I got the top done, and since I wasn't doing quilting on my domestic machine, I put it aside until late last year.  I pulled out the top and added the borders and sent it off to the long armer.

This is one of my favorites, mostly because it is a happy quilt, with good colors.  And, it is not a square quilt, so I will fit on a twin bed, measuring 63" X 77".  Sad, because I don't have a twin bed to put it on right now.  I have dreams of owning a cabin, and putting my quilts on lots of beds.  That's a big dream, and just a dream.

Forgive the shadow of the ladder prop, but the rest of the picture shows the pattern blocks in this quilt.  I really like the big floral squares in this quilt.  The print makes me smile.

Here is a close up of the borders and binding.  I always like the way Thimbleberries patterns for borders, they are often different with cornerstones, or different colors, or patterned blocks.

Just like the front of the quilt, the backing is light also.  It is a tone on tone beige, very common for Thimbleberries quilt backings, and background fabric.  Binding is a yellow tone on tone, and it makes the completion of the quilt just perfect.

2016 Finishes Quilts - Thimbleberries Sunrise - #20

Now we are up to 2005 Thimbleberries BOM Club called Sunrise and Sunset.  And, once again, the club offered two color ways, and this year I signed up for both colors.  If you remember, I posted about #18 here, which was the other color way.

Here is the dark color way #18 called Sunset:

This is the light color way #20 called Sunrise:

This light color way quilt is bigger than the dark color way.  The dark one was 64" square.  The Sunrise version is 62" X 72".   Notice the different inner border sashing.  The top and bottom are the same and the left and right are the same.  The sashing like this make these quilts stand out more than the normal blocks quilts with plain sashing.

Even the six blocks are different for the Sunrise.  So, if you wanted, you would have the twelve blocks (normal for a 12 month BOM) and could make a different quilt.  What I like about Thimbleberries blocks is they are very different from the standard kind of BOM blocks normally used.

This shows the different outer borders in another floral blue (somewhat like the Lakeside Pines).

The backing is another floral blue, and the binding is a tonal darker blue.

2016 Finished Quilts - Basket Case - #19

This is another Thimbleberries BOM Club.  Yes, I have participated in Thimbleberries clubs, programs, and kits from 2000 to 2008, eight years.  That was the period of time, I was working, making really good money (before the downturn of the economy), and buying lots of things online, while sitting in a hotel room with nothing else to do.  I also think it was a way to stay connected to my hobby, since I didn't spent much time at home.  I traveled about 320+ days a year, and I needed something to keep me grounded and attached to my quilting hobby.

Thus, this is the big quilt for the 2004 BOM Club.  It was called Basket Case, and has 12 different basket blocks to make up the quilt.  There were also 12 additional projects / kits available using one of the 12 basket blocks.  I have done a lot of those, because I could get a block done each month, and sometimes took the time to get one of the 12 additional projects done.    There are six pictures of the individual projects on my finished tab here, if you want to scroll down towards the end of the pictures.  Be gentle, this was when I was still learning to quilt, and my work is a bit wonky, especially the machine quilting I did on the projects.

I am a sucker for basket blocks and quilts, and wanted to get this one done.  I did work on the blocks during 2004, off and on, but as my traveling escalated towards 2008, lots of projects like this were put away, not to mention, we moved five times between 2000 to 2008,  and twice since 2004.  So, it got packed away and I finally dragged it out in 2016 to finish.  I sewed the blocks together and added the border.  This is how it turned out after coming back from the long arm quilter and bound.

Looking at it all laid out flat, it is a very different completed top.  for one, the sashing is blocks of nine patch and a variation of flying geese, and some tone on tone green and red blocks.  And, if you notice the outside  top and bottom border (green) is different from the outside left and right border (blue).  Then, the top and bottom inside border is a block (red at top) and appliquéd flowers (bottom).  All around this quilt, the layout is very different from anything I have ever done.

The following pictures are close up of the individual basket blocks.

Here is one of my most used projects from this quilt.  This is a bag made using the above quilt basket block.  This bag is 20" X 20" and holds a lot of stuff.  When I was traveling, I was able to carry hand work, my purse, and anything else, and was counted as one carry on.  It has been well used over the years, and has held up wonderfully!

More pictures of the quilt blocks in the quilt.

This is the up close picture of the top inner border.

This is an up close picture of the bottom inner border.

The backing is blue that matched one of the thin inner border fabric.  And the red binding makes this quilt pop!
