Vintage Sampler Month 2

Month 2 of the BOM Vintage Sampler came in the mail last week.  I gave it a few days to rest in the package, before I had the time to open it and tackle sewing it.  Not that there was much tackling, as it was two very simple blocks and strips.

This BOM is a little different, in that the piecing of the blocks are sewn together as the BOM progresses.  Below in this picture, you will notice that the basket portion block was from month 1.  Now it is sewn to the block from month 2.

2016 Finished Quilts - Tumbler - Quilt 3

Again, I have a few posts about this quilt as I was working on it.  You can read more about it here.
I will repeat that this is a Bonnie Hunter Leader and Ender 2015 project.    It was done in 30's reproduction fabrics, which I have a whole tub full.  No print was repeated in the 5" tumblers

I will admit, that this is not one of my favorite template patterns to sew together. It was hard to put two tumblers together off 1/4" at both ends and then sew them together, hoping it would look right when you went to press the seam.   But I like the end result!

I really like the backing (yellow 30's print) and the pink binding.

This quilt is currently on my side of the bed.  We have a Split King-Cal sleep number bed, so basicly it is a oversized twin, and this fits perfectly.  I used a poly-cotton blend inexpensive batting, and the quilt just envelopes you.  It's lighter than my 100% cotton batting quilts, so I am calling it my summer quilt.  

The new Bonnie Hunter leader & ender project was just announced last week.  It is an Hour Glass pattern, and I will be making it using that tub of 30's prints.  I want to make this one for my side of the bed again, only longer so it will tuck in and stay on the bed better .  Then this tumbler quilt will be my go to travel quilt.

2016 Finished Quilts - 40's Basket Quilt - Quilt 2

This one is kinda a duplicate of posts, as I have posted about the process of finishing this one awhile back.  This one is one of my favorites, as it looks classic and fresh at the same time.  Right now it spends it's life on my mom's bed.

Each basket is a different pattern, making the quilt a sampler quilt.  I tend to lean towards the samplers.  I like making different block patterns.  I have a tendency to get bored if I have to make the same block over and over again.

I have not done a solid background before, and since doing it for this quilt back in January, I find I really like it for this quilt.  Not sure if I would do it again on other quilts, but for now, I am happy with this quilt and it's backing.

2016 Finished Quilts - Star Struck -Quilt 1

This was my first completion and only completion for 2015 from my UFO pile.  I am considering it a 2016 finished quilt as it came back from the long arm quilter in December.

Fortunately, I had written two posts on in while putting the borders on and getting it off to the long arm quilter, so I don't have much more to say about this one.  You can read about it here.

The nice thing about the following pictures is that they are much nicer and better than those in the posts.  

This first picture is showing the whole top out in my front yard.  The roses were in full bloom and I thought it would make a pretty background.  I used an old wooden ladder (see prior post for a better picture) to prop up a corner for a nice visual.

Each of the quilts I took one of it laid out flat, so you can see the whole design.

2016 Completed Quilts Introduction

First remember when I made my new years resolution of completing UFO's this year, at lest 2 per month.  And Remember when I mentioned in past posts that I was really working on quilts and getting them completed?  

Also, the weather has not been the best this spring for taking pictures.  So I just let them get piled up, waiting for a nice sunny day and me having time to take the pictures.  My neighbor lent me the old wooden ladder as a prop.  

For the next month or so, I will post a finished quit picture(s), along with lots of information about the quilt and any other information I can think of about the process.

Singer 401A

We all know how much I like vintage sewing machines.  So, I walked into a quilt shop (the one where I drop off my quilts to be long arm quilted) and spotted this beauty.

I was just so excited when I saw it I just asked how much, they said $50, and I said sold.   I picked it up this Friday, got it home and, oh dear, no power cord or foot pedal.  So, the hunt was on looking on eBay.  Lo and behold, I found the set, and original set no less  Whoop!  Whoop!  Placed the order, about $40, and surprise it was in yesterday's mail.  

I had hubby help me get it out of the cabinet, plugged in the power cord and the foot pedal, and it worked!  I was all smiles and giggles.  

Let me tell you a little bit about this machine.  It is in the same family as the Rocketeer that I posted about last fall. Both of these machines are called slant machines, as the bar that holds the sewing foot is slanted.  All other machine have a straight up and down bar to hold the feet.  The slanted bar allows you to see the fabric better as the needle does the sewing.

According to the serial number, the machine was made in 1957 at the Anderson, SC plant.  What is really nice about these two machines is, the cams that came with the Rocketeer will work in this machine, the feet are interchangeable, and both use a class 66 bobbin.

I had to mess with the tension a little, and the machine sews a beautiful seam.  So, I started working on the half-square triangles and the machine purrs like a kitten.  I will be using it for the next few months, as I put away the vintage White machine for awhile.
