2016 Finished Quilts - Land of Lincoln Sampler - Quilt 7

I have written several posts on this quilt during the construction process of the top.  It is out of civil war reproductions and the top center block has a picture of President Lincoln, thus the name, Land of Lincoln Sampler.

It is more of a wall hanging, lap quilt. as it measures 60" X 60".  Right now, my mom covers up with it for an afternoon nap on occasion.

Here is the picture of President Lincoln, in the center of a block.  Sorry for the shadow of me taking the picture.

The blocks were all different, most I haven't done before, but this kind of project always builds more quilting skills.

The backing is nondescript, just a plain small beige reproduction print.

The setting blocks between the quilt blocks are five strips of the various fabrics used in the quilt, this was a first for me using this type of setting blocks, and it is a wonderful way to use up leftover fabric, rather than adding another background fabric.

Next are the specific facts about the quilt:

Size:  60" X 60"
Fabric Lines Used:  Various civil war reproductions, sent in kits in a BOM program.

Pattern:  Land of Lincoln Sampler #244 by Civil War Legacies
Designer:  Carol Hopkins Designs
Long Arm Quilter:  Carol Logan
Year Began:  2011
Year Completed:  2016

Land of Lincoln Top is Done

Yes sireee, this top is now done, and another BOM can be crossed off my list.  And, yes, it is getting put on top of the pile of other completed tops that are in need of quilting.  But, guess what?  I am finally going to get to quilt all of my tops using a long arm machine.  Am I getting a long arm machine?  Noooo.  But....

We are fortunate enough to have a local quilt shop (about 30 miles away from my house), that has 6 long arm machines in the basement of their store that they rent by the half day or full day.  First, thought, I have to take a day long class to learn how to use their machines and how to do the different types of long arm quilting.  I am so excited, as I can finally finish up all my tops and have the quilts done to lay on my beds and give away to individuals.

The tops I have not quilted on my home machine are all double bed sized or bigger, and it just doesn't work well doing them on my machine.  I can do baby quilts, wall hangings, and table runners, but the big bed quilts are another matter that need to be done on a long arm machine.  If I can get proficient enough on the long arm machine, I am hoping I can get two quilts done in a day.

I wish I could have taken a better picture out side so you could get a full view, but here in the Northwest, it is pouring rain.  But with this picture, you get an idea of what it turned out to look like completed.  The finished quilt measures 60" X 60", and I will probably use it as a bed runner on top of another civil war quilt.

Thanks for following me on the process of finishing another UFO BOM!!!!

I will be starting another one next week as soon as I can decide which one I would like to do.  I am thinking one along the romantic / cottage type BOM just to change up what you will be looking at when I post progress.

All In

As you know, if you have been reading my blog for the last couple of months, that I have been working on some older unfinished BOM's.  One of these is called the Land of Lincoln Sampler, and I have been posting a block about once a week showing the progress of getting the BOM done.  Well, the other night, I realized I only had three blocks left to do, so I cut them all out and have gotten them all sewn up.  Here are the last three blocks in the Land of Lincoln Sampler:

This is block 11, and it is called,  Army Star.  Not one of my favorites...

This is block 12, and it is called, Star of Valor.  This one looks too Christmas for my liking, so hopefully it will fit in better when the quilt gets put together.

And this is block 13, and it is called of course, Log Cabin.  Again, looks more Christmas than I would like, but we will see...

These are the setting blocks that will be placed between all of the 13 blocks I have been making over the last couple of months.  There are 12 of these, and will be placed going in one direction in one row and then the opposite direction in the next row.  I have all of these setting blocks completed,  and a couple of the rows already sewn together, so I should have the whole quilt top done by Monday evening and a post about it on Tuesday.  This weekend I am at a trade show with my husband, and that leaves little or no time to sew.

If you would like to see all the other blocks and past posts, just click on the label at the end of this post "Land of Lincoln Sampler", and all rest will come up for your viewing pleasure (smile).

Land of Lincoln Sampler Block 9

I returned home mid-afternoon, Saturday, took a day of rest, and then hit the ground running today.  You see, I visit my parents who are in New Mexico.  While I am there, I always purchase large amounts of frozen red and green chili, and then stuff it all in a seprate suitcase and bring it home.  This time was no exception.  I brought back 45 pounds of green chili, and 50 pounds of red chili.  So today, I had to begin putting it "up" (which means getting it canned), so we can use it over the next couple of years.

Today, I woke up and started the long day processing/canning the some of the green chili into a sauce with cubed pork.  Each batch (6 quarts or  12 pints) takes about 3 hours to process .  I did 4 batches today, and  the next two days I will be busy finishing up the remainder of chili.

I did this block this evening, while the final batch was cooking in the pressure cooker, I stitched up Block 9 of the UFO BOM, Land of Lincoln.  This block is called "Yankee Puzzle".  Fortuntally, I had the block cut out before leaving town, so I was able to just sit down at the machine and just start sewing.  This block is super easy, using just half square triangles, and flying geese units.  Placement of the units and the placement of the fabric, makes the block look like a pinwheel.

Land of Lincoln Sampler Block 8

Well, I was able to get back to the UFO BOM block, and the one I was able to complete last night comes from the Land of Lincoln Sampler.  This is block 8, and is called "Union Block".  This block incorporates a version of the Bear Paw pattern and has a picture print in the center of the block.

This is a close up of the print "fussy cut" center of this block.  This was included in the kit for this month's BOM.  I believe it was a fabric panel of different writings surrounding Lincoln's time.

UFO BOM Progress

After completing my current year's BOM, I worked on the two UFO BOM's I am trying to get done this year.

First up is block 7 for the BOM called Land of  Lincoln Sampler.  The name of this block is Lincoln's Platform.

Next is month 6  from the BOM called A Civil War Tribute  This month calls for four of these 12" blocks.  I have two done, and two more to  complete.

I want to get these done, so I can move onto getting some quilting done on the last wall hanging I completed, and maybe one of the bigger quilt tops I have stored in a cubby.  But, fortunatly I have to work the quilting in between a custom order I just received!  Yipee!

UFO BOM progress

Well, this last week was slow going in the sewing room. Mostly because of some health issues, but I got to feeling better by Thursday, so to keep it simple, I worked on all of the UFO BOMs.

First up is block six of Land of Lincoln Sampler called "Farm Friendliness".

Next up is  Month 5 of the Tribute to the Civil War blocks.  This month called for (4) 12" blocks .  Here is a full view of the block made up.

And here is a pic of all four of the blocks done.

Then, last but not least, I added the sixth row on my civil war color way Farmer's Wife quilt.  There are a total of 15 rows all sewn on the diagional.  This is a side view of it hanging on my door.  When all the rows are done it will be a queen sized quilt!

BOM (Old) Update

This week I did some work on my ongoing older BOM's.  By working on three or four projects at a time, I don't get too bored with any one project.  Working on these older BOM's that I have had stored for a few years, also gives me a sense of accomplishment of cleaning up my stash.

First up is the progress of putting together the Farmer's Wife blocks.  This has been somewhat of a struggle because the blocks are different sizes.  The reason my blocks came out different sizes is because when printing off the templates from the CD that came with the book, I didn't make sure the print came out at actual size.  This caused them to come out slightly smaller, and slightly smaller over many pieces can be 1/4" or more.  Then, someone in our online group decided to incorporate Marti Mitchell's acrylic templates for some of the pieces throughout the quilt.  So using the incorrect sized paper pieces and the correct sized acrylic pieces have caused some difficulty in matching up the blocks and the sashing.  I have just a little warbling going on.  I am fairly confident that this will work itself out in final pressing, and when the quilting of the top gets done.  But so far, I am liking how it is turning out.

Next up is the next block from the Land of Lincoln Sampler BOM.  This is block #5, called Road to the White House.

And finally, the next block for the A Civil War Tribute BOM.  If you recall, each month requires more than just one block.  This month called for a 18" block and a 12" block.  This is Month 4 of the program.  Between you and me, these two blocks, on their own, are just plain ugly!  Actually, they look better here as a picture than in person.  But, I imagine once worked into the rest of the quilt, they won't be so ugly, and fit right in as if they belong.

Slow Progress

I have made very little progress in the sewing room last week.  I was working on the "Aussie" two zip hipster as a custom order, and sent a progress picture to the customer.  She was not to happy with the largeness of the flag on the front of the bag.  Sigh.

Fortunately, someone else is tickled pink about this bag, and I have it sold to them.  So, it has been back to the drawing board for the other customer.  It's also the time of year when the weekend gun shows happen, and I have to be there with my husband.  And, then there is the fall garden work that has to be done.  And in the Pacific Northwest, there is so much to be done, because everything needs to be trimmed back or dug up for a pretty spring showing.

I have worked on a couple of blocks with the old BOM's I am working on:

This first one is from the "Land of Lincoln Sampler" BOM and is block 4, called Kentucky Crossroads.

This block is from the "Civil War Tribute" BOM and is block 3.  But, with this BOM, each month has two to four of the same blocks to be made.  I have made the first 12" block and will need to make another one, then I will need to make the same block pattern two more times, only these blocks will be 18".

At least, you know that I am not just sitting around and doing nothing, just not much exciting to post about this time of year.

Land of Lincoln Sampler

Remember I like BOM's?  Well here is another one from 2011.  I am a big fan of traditional quilting and reproduction prints.  We have a semi-local quilt shop that I adore, but when I say semi-local, Something To Crow About is 70 miles from my house.  I adore this shop because they have awesome  reproduction civil war and 30's prints, a whole section of wools, and lots of BOM's.  I have participated in two of their programs, and manage to visit the shop about three times a year!  This is one of the two BOM's that I never got started on until this week. It is called Land of Lincoln Sampler and has thirteen pieced blocks and twelve rail alternating blocks.

Here is block one, called Illinois.

Block two called Lawyer's Puzzle

Block three called Presidential Armchair
