One Down, Two to Go

This weekend, as I planned, I got one of the baby quilts completed.  This one the squares are done in printed flannel and soft minkie fabric.  It measures about 40" by 48", which makes a good size for a baby for the first year or so.

 The backing is done with a red minkie fabric to make it extra special soft.  I chose to go with red, because I tend to make baby quilts in a gender neutral color scheme.  and the only other accent color left in the flannel pattern was blue or red.  So I opted for the red, and really like how it turned out.

It is a little thicker than one would be if made with just flannel or cotton fabric.  The nap on the minkie is much thicker and I didn't quilt the minkie areas, because I didn't want do take away from the softness of the quilt.

The flannel squares are quilted by outlining the square and putting an "X" in the square, and was done

in red thread to continue the contrast of the accent color.

And, last, but not least, I found a red flannel that was almost a perfect match to the red minkie on the back, to do the binding.  I find that binding with minkie is rather difficult, because it is so much thicker and doesn't look like it should once it is binded.

So there you have it, one baby quilt done, two more to go.  I am hoping to finish the other one that I posted the top portion of "Newton" fabric line.

Baby Quilts

I have an order for three baby quilts.  I really like doing baby quilts, because they go faster than a full size quilt, they move easier in the machine, and quilting the sandwiched pieces is way easier.  A couple of years ago, while on a shop hop, I picked up several "baby" themed prints, panels, and fabric lines so that I would have them on hand when I needed to make another baby quilt.  So, I dug these prints out and found that I could make three easy peasy baby quilts.  Here are two that I have started.  The first one, I am waiting for some fabric to arrive in the mail to finish the border, but the other one is done, and  this afternoon, I got it quilted and the first step of the binding put on, I will have pics of the completed one in the next few days, when I can get the second step of the binding hand sewn down.  Probably will get done at the trade show this weekend.

This pattern is called "Newton" by Clothworks.

This is just some flannel and minky squares done in primary colors, it will have red minky backing, and red flannel binding.  I quilted it with red thread.  

Dresden Plate Quilt Top Completed

Remember the post about the beginning of my Dresden Plate quilt  here?  And then there was nothing for quite some time?  All because I was working full time and doing trade shows one after another every weekend for like forever?  Well, between working outside on my flower beds and garden beds, catching up on laundry, and house work, I also squeezed in some quality sewing time, and along with the other items I have posted, I can now post my finished quilt top of the Dresden Plate.  Let me apologize first for the picture, as it had to be done inside, because here in the Pacific Northwest we have very few days of sunshine and without rain.

This project all began over a year ago with Ann Sutton of Bunny Hill's Scrappy Plate Quilt along.  It is still available on her blog here.  It has all the instructions, and finishing steps.  I am such a fan of traditional quilting, so I opted to make mine in a 30's reproduction print.  The pieces were easier to make that I thought they would be, and I chose to put the plates on a off white on white small striped background and machine applique my plates down with extra thick thread (jean topstitching thread).

And then for the sashing I chose a pink my Moda called 30's pink in the Bella Solids, and for the corner posts and first border, I chose a 30's pink flower print by Windham, Story Book IV.

So, there you have it, quilt top done!  Now for putting it together, and getting the quilting done.  I looked at Ann Sutton's finished quilt done by a professional quilter, and I am planning to do some of my kind of quilting (meandering) in the places that was done on her quilt. You have to go to her site here to see the pictures of her finished quilt.   Isn't it just beautiful?  I hope to work on getting this one quilted (among a few others) in the near future, while I am not working.

Cobbler's Shoes

Have you ever heard the adage about the cobbler's kids shoes?  Where the kid's shoes have holes in them and the cobbler doesn't have time to fix his kid's shoes because he is so busy working on customer's shoes?  Well I was tired of being a cobbler today, and made me two things for my self.  I am one of those women that carry her phone and her wallet in my bra.  So I use Valori Wells pattern, the "Little Wallet" to use as my wallet to carry in my bra.  The one that I have had for the last 6 months or so, needed a change.  I also wanted to have a case to put my IPhone in because I wanted some more protection for the phone.  I found just the pattern on Erin Erickson's blog Dog Under My Desk, called IPhone Sleeve.

More Done...

Well, I finished another part of my commissioned order done today!  Want to know why?  Because I am no longer working at the job that went to full time.  It is a long story, heard by anyone who has every worked for a jerk manager, so I won't bore all of you with the details.  Just know that I can work more on my hobbies and my store.  I have done the happy dance several times today!!

Blessed

It is so nice to be blessed!  If you have ever visited my Etsy store, you will find Oregon's two colleges items for sale.  Lately, I haven't had any sales and then even the last few days, I hadn't had any lookie loos either, and I was getting real discouraged.  Then, out of the blue, I had a customer contact me from the Midwest to do a custom order of 10 items totaling more than I have made in my little store since I opened it!  Just amazing!  Below is what I got done this evening,  a mini hipster, matching mini key fob, and a mini wallet done in Iowa Hawkeyes print.
