2016 Finished Quilts - Northwoods 4-Patch #14

Back in 2006, we lived in Portland, OR.  At that time, Connecting Threads was open to the public.  Vancouver, Washington is their headquarters and store at the time.  If you live in Portland, all you have to do is cross the Columbia River to Vancouver and then about 5 miles east to their store.  At that time, one could buy pre-cuts, kits, gifts, accessories, thread, and tools.  I was able to go a couple of times before they closed the retail part.  I couldn't find out when the retail closed, but it was only a couple of months after my last visit there.

This quilt, Northwoods 4-Patch, pattern at the bottom of the page.  It was free, and used to be on their website, but since there are so many new ones, I am posting it for anyone who would like to have it.

This is a nice over-sized throw, not quite the size for a twin bed.  The kit had enough to to the top, the back, and a scrappy binding.  It is done in Northcott yummy flannels, and is so soft and comfortable.  The colors are from the warm side of the color chart with brick reds, evergreen green, several shades of browns and tans, and a light background.

When it was finally done, I gave it to my husband for his recliner chair.  It fits him just perfect when he takes a nap and needs a little something to take the chill off.

Like I said, the kit had enough, that I was able to put together a so-called patterned backing.

This shows the whole pattern laid out.  You can see the scrappy binding too, in this picture.

Up close of the front and back with the scrappy binding.

Full-sized view of the backing of the scraps that I had left over from the patterned front.  Not the greatest, but it works for me.

Here is the free pattern.

2016 Finished Quilts - Unknown Name #13

Finally, the weather has been cooperating with me in order to take pictures of my finishes from 2016. I have 9 quilts that were finished last fall, and I was unable to get pictures of them until now.  You will notice as the days go by, that the number assigned to the quilt will be out of order, and that is because I had to give some away, and I have already blogged about them with very poor pictures.  But poor pictures are better than no pictures, right?

So, to kick off the next 9 quilts, we start with this one.

It is an approximately twin sized quilt, using the pattern I have no clue, done in Kansas Troubles fabric line.  And, that's all I can recall about this quilt.  Yep, I sewed up the top several years ago, stored it, and brought it out to finish (to meet my 2016 resolution of completing 2 quilts a month), and for the life of me, I can't not remember anything about it, where I got it from, why I chose to do this quilt, or even what the fabric line is called.  Nothing, Nada, Zip, Zero, Zilch, empty brain.....

All lain out, showing the pattern design.

View of the border fabric used.

A picture of the backing, with a better view of the binding, which is the same as the border.

2016 Finished Quilts - FQS Mystery Quilt 2012 - Quilt 10

Is anyone beginning to see a pattern here of the kind of quilts I like to make?  Yep, here is another one I got suckered into participating in from the Fat Quarter Shop.  They have an annual mystery quilt program.  I have only done two (I still have 2013 to put together.  Blocks are done, just have to get them sewn together and put one the borders.  Sigh...)  I haven't liked the last two years, but I did like this one for 2012.  It used Moda's Vintage Modern by Bonnie and Camille.

Their fabric lines are focused around red and turquoise for colors.  And this quilt is full of both colors.  It is bright, fun, and well designed.

Again, when using 12" X 12" blocks for a 12 month BOM program, you will usually end up with a twin size quilt.  This one measures 68" X 85".  I like the striped horizontal setting strips, and the flying geese vertical setting strips for the blocks.  It all played nice together.

Even the corners of the borders have some added whimsy to make this one stand out quite a bit.

Now the backing was a surprise, as it wasn't included in any of the blocks, but it ties in just perfect.

Next are the specific facts about the quilt:

2016 Finished Quilts - Asian Shadow Box Quilt 9

This quilt is the first in a series of posts about quilts that I have finished this UFO resolution year.

This quilt started out as a kit.  It was bought at a quilt shop off the beaten path, one I have not been back to ever since visiting about 4 years ago.  My husband spotted a shop sample on their wall, and said that his sister would love a quilt just like that one.  I was just going to get the pattern, when he discovered it was made up in a kit.

The quilt pattern is called, "Shadow Box".  Placement of the dark fabric on two sides of the prints, creates a 3D illusion giving it a shadow box effect.  The prints are various Asian prints set on a white background.

My husband helped me pick out this kit and fabrics, because he wanted me to make one for his sister. Her bedroom is in an Asian theme, and this quilt will be a perfect fit for her bed.

It is a nice size for a throw for a queen bed, but it is more of the size for a twin bed.  When I put the pictures of all my finished quilts on my FB page, this was the most favorite out of all my finishes so far.  If you can spot the error, please don't say anything, I found it once it was all done, and so far no one has noticed until I point it out, so I left it alone.

This is a close up of the border fabric and the matching binding.  I am doing more and more bindings using the same fabric as the last border.  I like the finished look of it when done.

This shows the backing I used.  It matches nothing with the front fabrics, but there are no repeats in the shadow boxes either, so this backing is a permit fit for this quilt.

Next are the specific facts about the quilt:

Size: 68" X 80"
Fabric Lines Used:  Various Asian fabrics

2016 Finished Quilts - Thimbleberries Warm Heart - Quilt 6

Where do I begin on this quilt?  Everyone knows that I was (and still am to a certain extent) a Thimbleberries fan.  There was a time when Thimbleberries was going strong and very popular, around the late 90's and the early 2000's.  During that time, I think I bought everything and anything that was Thimbleberries related.  I participated in every program, BOM, and yearly club that it had.  If I had to guess, I would say that I have over 75 projects, several BOM's and 10 yearly clubs UFO's that need to be done, completed, or just dumped.  When I say dumped, they are projects I know I will never make, so I need to break up the fabric in the kits and possibly make something else with these fabrics.  I am thinking of making several scrappy quilts using Thimbleberries prints, and I could add to my already amassed collection of Thimbleberries scraps.

But, I have digressed.  This quilt is part of a program called, Room by Room.  It was a 12 month program that had a complete quilt kit each month.  This was the first kit in the program, and it arrived on my doorstop around the time I got laid off during the 2008 downturn of the economy.  I went into a very dark place, but quilting helped me through the process.  I completed this quilt the same week it came in the mail.  But I didn't have the confidence to go ahead and quilt it then , and I found other projects to work on, so it laid sleeping for several years.

Sorting through my many UFO's, I came across this one again, and promptly sent it off to the long armer.  The pattern is called Warm Heart and designed by Lynette Jensen of Thimbleberries.

Most of the backings sold with the kits (and yes I bought the backings too, to all the projects) will be in the line of beige on beige that Thimbleberries is famous for not only for backings but backgrounds.

These pictures are a close up of the two block patterns in this quilt.

When it came back from the long armer, I took it on an weekend trip, I snapped a picture of it and posted it on my FB page with a post about carrying a quilt to trips and stays in hotels.  I received a lot of likes and comments.  It was a nice pat on the back.

A close up and better showing of the true color of the border.

2016 Finished Quilt - Pastel Baskets - Quilt 5

See double?  Yep, I have posted a quilt with this pattern here. It was done in the 40's print, remember?  Anyway, the quilt shop did this as a "counter BOM", in two different fabric lines at the same time.  So, silly me, I went ahead and did both ways.  I really like basket blocks, so I enjoyed doing these two quilts together.

The fabrics in this quilt are pastels from various different lines of fabric.

The difference in this quilt and the other basket quilt is, this one has a couple of added borders.  I chose to do that, because of all the leftover fabric that I had.  (Note:  the leftover fabric from the other basket quilt, I made a simple nine patch quilt that I gave away).  The outer border is close to what I would call a piano border, only the keys are a little wider in my border.  Totally random scrappy.

This is the backing,  Believe it or not, there was that much fabric left over, and I had enough to make another complete quilt.  I designed this quilt pattern for the backing.  It kinda worked itself out with the scraps leftover from the baskets.   This is the only "reversible" quilt that I have made.  Not sure I will do it again, but once is worth the effort.

Next are the specific facts about the quilt:

Size: 63" X 80"
Fabric Lines Used:  Various Pastels

2016 Finished Quilts - Tumbler - Quilt 3

Again, I have a few posts about this quilt as I was working on it.  You can read more about it here.
I will repeat that this is a Bonnie Hunter Leader and Ender 2015 project.    It was done in 30's reproduction fabrics, which I have a whole tub full.  No print was repeated in the 5" tumblers

I will admit, that this is not one of my favorite template patterns to sew together. It was hard to put two tumblers together off 1/4" at both ends and then sew them together, hoping it would look right when you went to press the seam.   But I like the end result!

I really like the backing (yellow 30's print) and the pink binding.

This quilt is currently on my side of the bed.  We have a Split King-Cal sleep number bed, so basicly it is a oversized twin, and this fits perfectly.  I used a poly-cotton blend inexpensive batting, and the quilt just envelopes you.  It's lighter than my 100% cotton batting quilts, so I am calling it my summer quilt.

The new Bonnie Hunter leader & ender project was just announced last week.  It is an Hour Glass pattern, and I will be making it using that tub of 30's prints.  I want to make this one for my side of the bed again, only longer so it will tuck in and stay on the bed better .  Then this tumbler quilt will be my go to travel quilt.

Next are the specific facts about the quilt:

Size: 64" X 90"
Fabric Lines Used:  30's Reproductions prints for various fabric lines

Pattern:  Leader / Ender 5" Tumbler
Designer:  Bonnie Hunter
Long Arm Quilter:  Carol Nelson Logan

2016 Finished Quilts - 40's Basket Quilt - Quilt 2

This one is kinda a duplicate of posts, as I have posted about the process of finishing this one awhile back.  This one is one of my favorites, as it looks classic and fresh at the same time.  Right now it spends it's life on my mom's bed.

Each basket is a different pattern, making the quilt a sampler quilt.  I tend to lean towards the samplers.  I like making different block patterns.  I have a tendency to get bored if I have to make the same block over and over again.

I have not done a solid background before, and since doing it for this quilt back in January, I find I really like it for this quilt.  Not sure if I would do it again on other quilts, but for now, I am happy with this quilt and it's backing.

Basket Quilt Finished

I finally got some decent pictures of this Basket quilt that came back from the long arm quilter at the beginning of February.  I showed you the following pictures in this post.

 The working on the binding.
.

The folded finished quilt.

Close up of the quilting.

So here is the finished quilt laying on my mom's bed.

Again, I used the background fabric for my backing.  I am beginning to like this look.  Somehow it brings continuity to the whole quilt.  And again, I chose a solid color to do the binding.  Seems this is a pattern I am following to use on quilts that have reproductions prints in them.  This time I chose a bright yellow to finish this quilt and I think it gave it the right touch.

Tumbler Quilt

See the 2015 Leaders and Enders box in the top right column of my blog?  I spoke about it here in blog posts last fall.

I have so many 30's reproduction prints that I was able to only use one print per tumbler not repeating any print.  Although the red polka dot looks like a repeating print, it isn't.

It is laid out on my side of our California Split King bed.  So I would say it is an oversized twin size.  I made it longer than I would normally, as I wanted it to be able to tuck in at the end of the bed so it will stay in place.  I am so happy with the way it turned out.  I just grabbed tumblers at random, and sewed the rows together at random, not paying attention if I got two yellows or two greens together.  It is a true random put together quilt.

I had a 30's reproduction yellow small print that was a wide backing width, so the whole back is in one piece.  I struggled with what to bind the thing with once it got it back from the long arm quilter.  I didn't want to use a single print, so I settled on a solid.  Then it was a decision to decide which color of solid to use.  Pink is my favorite color, and there was pink prints in the front, and there were pink flowers in the backing print, so pink it was for the binding.  Moda has a line of 30's reproduction solids, and this pink is one of them that I used for this quilt.

I couldn't be happier with this quilt!

The 40's Basket Quilt

I mentioned that I had gotten back three quilts from the long arm quilter, and I needed to add binding to them.  This is the first on that I did, the 40's print of basket patterns.

I needed to chose a binding color, and came up with 30's reproduction blue and yellow.

As you can see here (work in progress of putting on the binding), I chose the yellow.  This whole quilt was bright and cheery, I went with the the color that was just that, the one that looks like the sun.

These are the only pictures I picked to use for now (the weather here in the Pacific Northwest is not working withe blog picture taking) of this quilt.

This is a close up of one of the basket blocks showing the quilting and one of the basket patterns used in the quilt.  If you look at the top picture of the whole quilt, you'll notice that each basket block is a different pattern.

I am really happy to see that this one is done, finished, complete!  It will fit a twin size bed and will look just right someday, when I figure out how to do some displaying of them throughout the house.
